As fans eagerly await the highly anticipated spinoff series of HBO’s hit show “Game of Thrones,” one of its stars, Matt Smith, has shared his thoughts on the future of the franchise.
Smith, known for his role as the eleventh Doctor in the popular sci-fi series “Doctor Who,” will be joining the cast of “House of the Dragon,” the upcoming prequel series set 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” In an interview with Variety, he expressed his excitement and enthusiasm for the project.
“It’s a massive, massive show,” Smith said. “I think there are 10 episodes and it will be a huge, huge production. I’m just really excited to get started.”
The actor also praised the show’s writing team, which includes “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin and showrunner Ryan Condal, for their ability to create complex and compelling characters.
“I think they’re some of the best writers in the business, so it’s a privilege to work with them,” Smith shared. “It’s a great team and a wonderful world to be a part of.”
While details about the plot and characters of “House of the Dragon” are being kept under wraps, Smith hinted at the epic scale and scope of the show, comparing it to its predecessor.
“I think it’s going to be huge,” he said. “The scope of it is so vast, and it’s such a rich world that George R.R. Martin has created. I think it will be just as exciting and engaging for the audience as ‘Game of Thrones’ was.”
The original show, based on Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels, became a global phenomenon during its eight-season run, breaking numerous records and winning countless awards. Its success has raised the bar for “House of the Dragon,” but Smith believes the new series has the potential to live up to its predecessor’s legacy.
“I think it will be different, but equally brilliant,” he said. “I think the fans will love it. It’s a fantastic team and a fantastic world, and I’m sure they’ll do an incredible job with it.”
As for his own character, Smith remained tight-lipped, only revealing that he will be playing a Targaryen prince. But he did express his excitement at the opportunity to explore a new fantasy world and bring it to life for audiences.
“It’s always fun to play someone who’s a bit out of the ordinary,” Smith said. “To play a prince in a fantasy world is a dream come true for me.”
With production set to begin in 2021, fans will have to wait a little longer to see Smith and the rest of the cast in action. But one thing is for sure, “House of the Dragon” is shaping up to be another epic journey into the world of Westeros, filled with intrigue, drama, and of course, dragons.
So, to all the “Game of Thrones” fans out there, get ready to be transported back to this beloved universe and witness its origins like never before. And with Matt Smith’s infectious enthusiasm and talent, the future of the franchise looks very promising indeed. Winter may be coming, but so is “House of the Dragon,” and it’s sure to be worth the wait.
