During the 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), held in Abu Dhabi in January 2026, Angola reaffirmed its commitment to expanding renewable energy as a central pillar of its national energy strategy. Represented by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, the country highlighted the role of structured planning, international cooperation and long-term investment in accelerating its energy transition.

Angola’s participation in IRENA reflects a broader strategic approach aimed at diversifying the national energy mix while ensuring system reliability and sustainability. In recent years, renewable energy has gained increasing relevance within national planning frameworks, not only as a response to climate challenges but also as a means to strengthen energy security and reduce structural vulnerabilities.

At the Assembly, discussions focused on the integration of large-scale renewable projects, grid stability and the importance of regulatory frameworks that support both public and private investment. Angola’s engagement in these forums aligns with its ongoing efforts to modernise the electricity sector and attract international partners with proven technical expertise.

The Minister emphasised that renewable energy development in Angola is being pursued through a phased and technically grounded approach. This includes the expansion of generation capacity, reinforcement of transmission infrastructure and continuous improvement of institutional governance mechanisms.

IRENA’s Assembly also provided a platform for dialogue with international stakeholders, reinforcing Angola’s position as an active participant in global energy discussions. Such engagement contributes to knowledge exchange, policy alignment and access to best practices that support national objectives.

As 2026 begins, Angola’s presence at IRENA signals continuity rather than disruption. The country enters the new year with a clear direction: advancing renewable energy development while maintaining operational stability and institutional discipline across the energy sector.
